Fire in one syllable

I know there are many native english speakers who says 'cran' instead of 'crayon', but i've also heard some say something that sounds like 'mere' instead of 'mirror'.

Something I just don't seemed to be able to do is to say 'fire' in one syllable. I've heard it several time but i only seem to produce a 'Fah' with some weird glutturol sound at the end. Do you guys know how to say it?

Is this something reserved for words with R-sounds in them or is it common to shorten the syllables in other words aswell?

Personally I wouldn't pronounce it with just one syllable, but with two (Fi - Yer). Even though I am English, I didn't really know why this was the case, but it is something to do with my accent being non-rhotic, meaning I don't pronounce the 'R' at all.
